What is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky?
Single Malt Scotch Whisky is malt whisky which has been produced in only one distillery. In order to be labelled a "Malt" the spirit must be made purely from malted barley. Even if a whisky contains the smallest amount of grain whisky, it is classed as a blended whisky. In order to be a "Scotch Whisky" the spirit must have matured in an oak cask in Scotland for a minimum of three years. It must also have been bottled at a minimum strength of 40% alcohol by volume, although the bottling need not necessarily take place in Scotland.
