Malt
Whisky and the Laichmoray Hotel at the heart of the Scotch Whisky
Industry.
The
Laichmoray Hotel
lies at the very heart of the Scotch Whisky Industry, at the gateway
to the Malt Whisky Trail and within 50 miles there are more than
40 distilleries (half of all the distilleries in Scotland). Distilling
is one of Scotland's most important export industries and, recognising
it's importance, the Laichmoray Hotel
in Elgin devotes "The Scotch Corner Lounge" to Scotland's "uisge
beatha" or "Water of Life".
Whether your
interest is academic or purely recreational your visit to the
home of Malt Scotch Whisky will only be complete having stayed
at Elgin's Premier Hotel, the
Laichmoray where you have a comprehensive selection
of over 160 malt whiskies to test your palate, and your stamina!
What
is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky?
Single
Malt Scotch Whisky is malt whisky which has been produced in only
one distillery. In order to be labelled a "Malt" the spirit
must be made purely from malted barley. Even if a whisky contains
the smallest amount of grain whisky, it is classed as a blended
whisky. In
order to be a "Scotch Whisky" the spirit must have matured
in an oak cask in Scotland for a minimum of three years. It must
also have been bottled at a minimum strength of 40% alcohol by
volume, although the bottling need not necessarily take place
in Scotland.
Where
did the art of making whisky originate?
No-one knows
precisely when Highland farmers first converted their surplus
barley into a spirit which would see them through the long northern
winter, but the art was probably established in 1494 when the
Court Chroniclers first noted the provision of malt to a certain
Friar John Cor, who thus became Scotland's first recorded distiller.
Speyside's
Single Malts
Speyside
is the greatest whisky making region in the world and is home
to such well known brands as The
Macallan, The
Glenlivet, Glenfiddich,
Benromach
(Gordon and Macphail), Cragganmore
and Glen
Moray all of which are easily accessible from Elgin. If desired,
our staff can arrange for you to visit, tour and sample these
and other distilleries.

Due in part
to their number, and the geographic diversity of Moray, Speyside's
malt whiskies are highly varied in taste but all equally well
regarded for their individual distinctive qualities.
